Jhargram(WB): Two herds of elephants comprising more than 70 elephants have entered the Nayagram and Kalaikunda Forest area of West Midnapore district Thursday, a Forest department official said.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Anjan Guha said a herd comprising around 52 elephants have entered the Nayagram area after crossing the Subarnarekha river.

Another herd comprising around 26 elephants have entered the Kalaikunda forest area, Guha said.

Both the herds have destroyed a large amount of paddy crops and vegetables in the area, he informed.

The Forest department officials are keeping a watch on the herd and trying to send them back to Dalma forest from where they have come.

The DFO said the elephants have entered the areas as their food habits have changed and they have developed a liking for ripened paddy and vegetables.
