New Delhi, Oct 20, 2009: Festivities brought a smile as the job index increased by 4.1% in September’09 as compared to August ’09, Naukri JobSpeak reported.
“The secular trend is positive across sectors. Had it not been for an early festival season we may have seen further improvement in the index. The good news is that the IT and BPO sectors which are big employers especially at entry and junior levels seem to be in positive territory after a long time.” said Hitesh Oberoi, COO and Director, Info Edge.
September’09 saw a positive trend across sectors and cities. The report covering 41 industries shows a phenomenal double digit increase in hiring activities across 14 industries in September. A single digit increase was reflected in 13 sectors whereas 11 functional areas reflected a dip.
ITES, BPO saw a significant push in September’09 as compared to August’09. Out of the top 13 cities, 7 cities saw an upward trend in hiring.
Hiring activity went up across all experience levels. The highest growth was registered in the hiring for Freshers and Trainees which has gone up by 39 %.
Monthly Trends
Out of the top 13 cities, Mumbai, Chennai and Delhi/NCR saw an upward trend in hiring at 9%, 8.4% and 3.5% respectively. Smaller cities like Ahmedabad and Vadodara witnessed double digit growth at 11.8% and 12.5% respectively.
Hiring activity declined by 5.4%, 3.4% and 2.4% in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Pune respectively in September ’09 as compared to August ’09.
A surge in hiring activity pushed up the indices for most of the industries. ITES/BPO, saw an increase in hiring activity in September’09 by 18.3%. Real Estate and Retail bounced back in September’09 with an increase by 36.8% and 12.2% respectively over Aug 09 but are still considerably away from August’08 levels. Sectors like Construction & Engineering, Insurance and IT Software improved by 6%, 4.5% and 2.1% in September’09 as compared to August’09.
Banking & Finance and Oil & Gas saw a drop in hiring activity by 6.5% and 4.6% respectively in September’09 as compared to August’09.
While hiring activity saw a positive trend across most functional areas, the demand for ITES, BPO professionals grew by 21.4% in September’09 as compared to August’09.
The hiring for HR, Admin and Project Management professionals increased by 10.4% and 9% respectively. Sales and Business Development professionals witnessed a decline in the hiring activity by 3.6% in Spetember’09 as compared to August’09.
On Total Jobs (this includes refreshed jobs), the index moved up by 4.2% in comparison to Aug 09. According to the Total Jobs Index, the index peaked in Sep’08 at 1004 and bottomed in Dec’08 at 739.
