Rail Budget: No hike in passenger fares; freight rates cut Zeebiz Bureau

New Delhi: Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday presented a populist Rail Budget for 2010-11 fiscal by leaving the passenger fares untouched, cutting the freight charges of grain and kerosene, and announcing 52 new long distance trains. The Budget also proposed enhanced cooperation with the private sector to expand the world’s second largest railway network.

In her 110-minute speech in the Lok Sabha, the minister said “social responsibility” is the motto of the Railways rather than economic viability, and added she did not want to “impose any burden” on the citizens.

"Therefore, I do not propose any increase in passenger fares of any class or category of trains. Similarly, I do not intend to increase freight tariff," Banerjee said.

She further ruled out privatization of the railways, but said the expansion of the PSU could be undertaken through public-private partnership (PPP) mode.

vidharbha is the most backward region in maharastra state after north east and orissa, vidharbha is always neglected in maharastra so i request others don`t try to become part of maharastra till maharastra government gives vidharbha as a separate state, telangana is far better than vidharbha almost 50 to 100 times better than vidharbha this is all because it has got merged with maharsatra in 1960-61 that brought a very bad fate for vidharbha and it`s people, please improve the infrastructure , industries, roads, bridges, dams, water supply, railways, airports, sez etc give a special package to vidharbha don`t divert vidharbhas fund, water to any part of maharastra like western maharastra,nasik-jalgaon,aurangabad-nanded etc.please save vidharbha. otherwise there will be people joining naxal movements which is there only in vidharbha in maharastra. so do some work to develope vidharbha.

    OK

For the future I suggest that specialized cancer hospital for railway employees may be set up at major centres in India.

Track maintenance, rake maintenance, cleanliness of train toilets, safety and security of passengers, stoppage of harassment of bona fide passengers of reserved coaches by daily office-goers, maintaining time schedule of trains, etc. are some of the important things which need to be taken care of.

Various promises made in this year`s budget must be kept without any loss of time.

Finally, while keeping the interest of the common folk, care need to be given on raising resources for Indian Railways. The financial factor has to be given due importance.
