Tell us about leadership, emotional and spiritual intelligence?

Emotional intelligence or EQ is the ability to effectively manage one’s own emotions and those of others. Spiritual intelligence or (SQ) is about self-awareness, understanding one’s purpose and living ethically. In the current global business environment of competitiveness, volatility, greed, and aggression, it is important for executives to learn to deepen their self-awareness, reinforce their positive beliefs, and manage negative emotions, behaviours and attitudes.
EQ and SQ help executives to access their inner power and become better leaders and managers. EQ and SQ help to develop winning teams, reduce destructive conflict and workplace politics, build shared vision around a common purpose, and promote a culture of excellence, innovation and risk taking, which ultimately lead to improvements in individual and organisational performance.

Why is it important for leaders to have a spiritual and an emotional side?

Managers/ leaders who are more evolved in terms of emotional and spiritual intelligence tend to be more authentic, happy and intuitive. Their locus of control is internal. They are better at building interpersonal relationships, managing teams and fostering trust, which is a prerequisite of any successful business relationship. Successful leaders exhibit qualities of empathy, compassion, and respect, which are all aspects of emotional intelligence.
Authenticity is about accepting one’s uniqueness and walking the road less travelled rather than following someone else’s path. Authenticity generates inner contentment and happiness.

An international survey recently stated that social skills and digital literacy have become a major “must-have” for new age employees. Do you think that spiritual and emotional skills are equally important?

Social and digital skills are important for professionals from a marketing perspective. Spiritual and emotional skills, on the other hand, strengthen leadership capabilities in an individual. They generate relationships between individuals and teams that are based on trust, respect, and strong moral foundations. Such leaders possess strong business acumen, risk taking ability and innovation propensities. They tend to be brave, continuously confronting their fears, walking through the unknown, and continuously pushing their boundaries of comfort. Their stress thresholds tend to be higher than ordinary people’s, and they exhibit high levels of self-confidence, emotional stability, and mental contentment. They are able to detach, surrender and accept defeat. They welcome challenges in their lives as opportunities to learn and grow.

Is there any way one can judge the spiritual quotient of an individual?

Spiritual Intelligence is a set of certain values, behaviours, attitudes and principles, which are difficult to measure or judge because of their qualitative nature. However, spiritual intelligence in a leader is evident by the profound effect they have on their teams, organisations, nations and the world. Some of the best examples of leaders with high spiritual quotient are Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela.
