Mount Litera Zee School Patiala launched the ‘Illuminating Lives’ Project as part of this Diwali celebrations. The objective of the project was to celebrate Diwali with lesser fortunate people in the city and bring smiles to many families this Diwali. The project also sought to teach the children empathy, generosity and gratefulness which are key life lessons for every child.
The initiative began with an invitation for a diya making competition among the children, parents and grandparents at the school. The handmade diya’s were then sold in an exhibition at the school. The money generated from the exhibition was used to buy clothes, toiletries and food which was gift wrapped into small bundles.
The students then visited 3 NGO run schools in a slum district of Patiala and celebrated diwali with the children there. There shared their experiences with these children and distributed gifts among the lesser fortunate children. They Staff and students of MZLS Patiala also interacted the parents of these students and stressed on the importance of education and requested the parents to keep sending their children to school so that they atleast get some basic education.
“The students really enjoyed the initiative especially since they were able to bring some happiness into the usually dull lives of these unfortunate kids. They also learnt to appreciate and value the opportunity of getting a good education. The enthusiasm has motivated me and my team to conduct similar community contact programs in the future also” said the Principal of MLZS, Patiala.
“Illuminating Lives is a small step taken by the school to connect to the community and understand that the best happiness is when you are the reason of someone else’s happiness. After all, Happiness consists in giving and in serving others.The parents value such projects since it teaches the children valuable life skills which cannot be taught in a classroom. A school should be a larger institution than its four walls and should take the lead in being a change agent in society” said Mr. Nitin Jindal, Cluster Manager, Zee Learn who assisted the management in this initiative.
