Where have Rs 10 coins gone? New Delhi: More than a year after its launch and amid Reserve Bank's claim that it had circulated 8 crore pieces of the ten-rupee coin, one wonders where the currency is?

Launched with much fanfare as an alternative to paper currency, the 8-gm coin with golden rim is hard to find in the market place.

Experts have different opinions on the matter. While some say that since the dual-metal coin resembles the euro, people often keep it as a souvenir, others are of the view that Rs 10-coins becoming popular is just a matter of time.

Canara Bank's senior official Raj Kumar said: "The (Rs 10) coins have not become popular as people prefer to carry the note which is available in abundance."

He added that the demand of Re 1 and Rs 2 coins is more as the currency notes of the same value are either not available or if available are in a poor condition. "Similar is the case with Rs 5 coins," Kumar said.

When contacted, an RBI official said that there is enough supply of Rs 10 coins in the market. Like other coins, with time it will become popular too.

the article fails to explain the question it raised, where are those crores of coin gone? popular or not, currency has to be there in the circulation for buying goods etc. but its really astonishing to find the diappearance of the coins from the market so soon.

yes, the design is really pathetic and disappointing. you take 1,2 or 5 rs coins which have lost all aesthetic sense in the latest version, you have to look twice to make sure you are giving 1 re or 2 rs coin.. they are really very poor design indeed. i hope at the time of commonwealth games the govt will come out with some better design coins like they did at the time of asian games.

10 rs coins havent dissappeared they are given in black u have to pay 30 rs extra for 1000 rs

that is why common man is not interested in having coins they prefer notes which are available easily

rbi
should take initiative and distribute coins to retail shops...........

i have been trying to understand one thing since my teenage why government is not improving banking rather than speaking abt notes and coin. who need these coins and notes. why people carry these notes and coins. if goverenment make compulsary use of check and card system then government can get more tax and money. i dont know why, people of this country are so stupid. and how this system works. why goverent is making 1000 note. by this way one day they 100000 note. or even bigger.trust me

rs 1000 coin is a good idea. carrying 1 lakh as 100 coins in small box is very easy & convinient.
