London: Liverpool will spend 20 million pound to land Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani - but only when Xabi Alonso finally joins Real Madrid.
According to a British newspaper, the Reds have agreed a deal in principle for the Italian, 25, who has won 11 full caps and turned down Arsenal and Chelsea when he was 16.
Liverpool are demanding 30 million pounds for Alonso plus a series of add-ons worth up to five million pounds more - yet Real are adamant they will not go that high.
Anfield managing director Christian Purslow met Real official Jose Angel Sanchez in Barcelona before Sunday’s friendly against Espanyol.
Purslow admitted: “There has been no agreement. Talks have been very friendly but we need to continue talking.”
Alonso, 27, is finally expected to move to Spain by the end of the week.
