Balurghat: The Archaeological
department, government of India, has sanctioned Rs 15 lakh for
excavation works at Bangarh in South Dinajpur district of West
Bengal, a top official said on Thursday.
The departent, which had from February, 2008 started
excavation work of the relics dating back to ancient times at
Bangarh, would first keep the articles at a preservation
centre in the area, senior archaeologist Tapanjyoti Baidya
told reporters here.
The excavation team already unearthed several seals
dating back to Sen dynasty that ruled Bengal through the 11th
and 12th centuries and terroacota figurine. Besides columns of
houses throwing up possibilities of the existence of a
civilisation in the area.
Coins of Mughal and British period were also
discovered during the digging operation, Baidya said.
The department will again commence excavation work in
the area, falling under Gangarampur block, next month.
