New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday said the Election Commission`s (EC) decision to ban Amit Shah from addressing rallies in Uttar Pradesh has saddened the party.
Election Commission (EC) of India on Friday had banned Amit Shah from addressing any public rally after he made hate speeches during election campaigns.
BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the party has requested the EC to repeal the ban and asserted that Shah`s case cannot be equated with that of the leader of Samajwadi Party (SP), Azam Khan, who has also been banned by the EC under similar circumstances on Friday.
"The Election Commission has banned Amit Shah from campaigning during elections. We respect the Election Commission, they have done a great work. We are saddened by this step as his show cause was not even considered. We have requested the commission to reconsider the decision. It is not right to equate Azam Khan with Amit Shah," he said.
EC had also banned both politicians from holding any public meetings or road shows to prevent the two leaders from disrupting the poll atmosphere and hurting religious sentiments.
The EC had also ordered the authorities to register First Information Reports (FIR) against the two politicians and initiate criminal proceedings.
