New Delhi: A FIR was lodged against Bharatiya Janata Party`s (BJP) in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Amit Shah on Sunday for stirring up a controversy with his `revenge` remark in the riot-hit Muzaffarnagar.
The Chief Electoral Officer, UP, Umesh Sinha has said that his speech in Muzaffarnagar was in violation of model code of conduct so an FIR has been filed against him.
Shah was booked under section 153 of the IPC (inciting people) and section 125 of the Representation of the People Act (promoting enmity between different classes), the DM said.
Uttar Pradesh poll authorities have sent the CD of the remark made by Shah in Muzaffarnagar, which witnessed communal frenzy last year, along with report of the District Election Officer to the Election Commission in New Delhi.
In his speech, Shah had said that the upcoming Lok Sabha polls was not only about voting out the government that protects and gives compensation to those who killed Jats, it was an election for honour and to take revenge for the insult heaped on them. He also said that it was an election to teach a lesson to those who had committed injustice.
The Congress slammed Shah`s remarks and demanded his arrest while also asking Election Commission to ban him from participating in the electioneering process.
The party also asked EC to take stern action against BJP`s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi for creating animosity between communities as Shah is considered to be his close aid.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which also went to the poll panel to seek action against the former Gujarat minister `for spreading communal hatred`, in a statement said that the EC should immediately register a criminal case against Shah as his inflammatory remarks were aimed at spreading communal hatred.
Defending Shah over his statement, the BJP had said that the it was not an attempt to polarise the elections. On the other hand they said that it was Congress president Sonia Gandhi for trying to communalise the polls by meeting Shahi Imam of Delhi`s Jama Masjid and asking him to consolidate the secular votes.
