Ahmedabad: The Gujarat BJP legislature party met on Tuesday evening in Gandhinagar at the state secretariat. It led to speculations that a decision on the likely successor of Chief Minister Narendra Modi may be taken. Modi too attended the meet.
Other top state functionaries too were present at the meeting.
However, contrary to speculations that deliberations will be held at the meeting on Modi`s likely successor in state if he were to form government at Centre and head it as PM, the meeting was centred around Modi`s contribution to "BJP`s victory", PTI reported.
Sources said everything related to Modi`s successor will be decided only after results are out on May 16.
On the occasion, BJP legislators hailed Modi for conducting an extensive campaign and bringing BJP close to a "decisive win".
"It is the `mantra` of my life to play any role given by my party with commitment and I will ensure that there is no slackness in it," Modi said in his address to MLAs after the BJP legislature party meeting.
Amid slogans, the BJP`s prime ministerial nominee gave a detailed account of canvassing he had done for the party candidates, distance he has clocked while covering the length and breadth of the country, use of technology, number of rallies and other issues.
Earlier today, with exit polls predicting a victory for the NDA, Gujarat BJP leaders went into a huddle, triggering speculations about finding a successor to Modi, but the party dismissed such conjectures and described the talks as "routine".
The meeting chaired by state BJP chief RC Faldu set off speculations about discussions being held to find Modi`s successor after he moves over to Delhi, PTI reported.
However, BJP`s state unit general secretary Vijay Rupani described these meetings as "routine" and said any decision on the next Chief Minister will be taken only after May 16, when the results of the Lok Sabha elections are out.
Several names including those of Amit Shah, BJP national general secretary and Modi`s pointsman in key battleground state of Uttar Pradesh, and senior ministers Anandi Patel, Nitin Patel, Saurabh Patel besides organising secretary of the state party Bhiku Dalsania are doing the rounds as possible successor to the incumbent Gujarat CM.
Nitin Patel and Dalsania have openly expressed their willingness to take up the top job.
All the major exit polls yesterday predicted a NDA victory on May 16, the counting day, with BJP`s PM candidate Narendra Modi likely to be the next occupant of 7, RCR.
