PDP accuses EC of failure to act against NC

Opposition Peoples Democratic Party Friday accused the Election Commission of failure to take action against the ruling National Conference and its leaders for alleged repeated violations of the Model Code of Conduct.

Srinagar: Opposition Peoples Democratic Party Friday accused the Election Commission of failure to take action against the ruling National Conference and its leaders for alleged repeated violations of the Model Code of Conduct.

"While the EC has been alert to violations of model code of conduct in rest of the country, it seems to be dead when it comes to Jammu and Kashmir," PDP president Mehbooba Mufti told reporters here.

Referring to NC President Farooq Abdullah`s statement about PDP leaders, Mufti said, "We hope that the EC will take action in this case as it did in the cases of (SP leader) Azam Khan and (BJP leader) Amit Shah (for making inflammatory speeches)," she said.
"We have written to commission about wazwan (traditional Kashmiri cuisine) being transported to NC headquarters in police vehicles, and we also complained about the inflammatory statements of NC president Farooq Abdullah in which he had alleged that PDP has nexus with Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit. However, no action has been taken so far," she said.
The PDP president said if the EC does not take any action on the "inflammatory statements made by Abdullah, it would tantamount to hanging democracy in Kashmir".

Mehbooba alleged that National Conference will do everything that it can to avoid defeat in the elections but it is a test of "credibility" for the Election Commission.
