CPI(M) activist allegedly killed by TMC workers after explosives found near Mamata`s rally venue

A day after some explosives were recovered few kilometers away from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee`s election rally venue in Birbhum district, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers allegedly attacked a CPI(M) activist at Haraipur village here on Saturday, who was passing through the area at the time of the recovery of the explosives.

The police identified the victim as, Seikh Hiralal, a 37-year-old farmer, who died today when he was being taken to a hospital in Kolkata. "A man was reportedly attacked by a mob yesterday died on the way to hospital. A compliant has been lodged against eight persons. We have started investigation," said Superintendent of Police of Birbhum Rasid Munir Khan. As per reports, Hiralal was beaten up in full public view and died on his way to hospital succumbing to head injuries. The family members of Seikh claimed that a clash broke out yesterday between Trinamool Congress and CPI(M) workers at Haraipur village, on the outskirts of Suri. They alleged that TMC supporters attacked Seikh with sharp weapons and seriously injured him. Seikh was shifted to Suri Hospital but doctors there advised the family to shift him to some better place. On the way to Kolkata, Seikh succumbed to his injuries, family sources said. The family member of Seikh claimed that they have lodged a police complaint against eight TMC supporters for killing Seikh. Following the incident, both the CPI(M) and the Congress have alleged that the recovery of the explosives were staged to target Hiralal who was the key witness to a previous political murder. Meanwhile, 105 crude bombs and explosive manufacturing material were seized by security officials during a search operation in Birbhum district today. The raid was carried out by a joint squad of CRPF and state police in the Bamdevpur village under Rampurhat police station area in the district. The operation was based on intelligence inputs and the forces recovered 105 country-made bombs, 1kg of gunpowder, sharpnels and other explosive material, a senior official said. The cache has been handed over to local police and further investigation were on, the official said. Birbhum goes to polls on April 30 along with eight other constituencies in West Bengal.
