TN: 15 PT workers booked for `assaulting` independent candidate

Cases were Friday registered against 15 workers of the Puthiya Tamizhagam for allegedly assaulting and injuring an independent candidate, contesting against PT leader K Krishnaswamy in Tenkasi Lok Sabha constituency, police said.

The candidate, S Radhakrishnan from Surveyor Colony in Madurai, was allegedly attacked when he was campaigning near here by an armed gang yesterday.

Some persons have been detained for questioning, police said, adding, Radhakrishnan was also booked following a counter complaint from a PT functionary for allegedly threatening the party`s workers.
Earlier, the gang members abused him,and threatened him for contesting against Krishnaswamy, police said.

Police said according to the complaint filed by Radhakrishnan, the gang members also snatched Rs 47,000 from him and took away valuables from his car.

Radhakrishnan, who was injured, was treated as an outpatient at a local hospital, police said.

Meanwhile, a PT local functionary K Rajalingam, who is in charge of election work, lodged a complaint that Radhakrishnan distributed pamphlets criticising Krishnaswamy.

The complainant said the workers only questioned him in this regard, but Radhakrishnan threatened and even tried to hit them with his car. Police registered a case against Radhakrishnan also following this, sources said.
