Another Bharatiya Janata Party MLA in the Goa assembly has resigned from the party to join the Congress.
Panaji: Another Bharatiya Janata Party MLA in
the Goa assembly has resigned from the party to join the Congress.
Dayanand Sopte, representing Pernem constituency, today
tendered his resignation to the speaker of the assembly
After submitting the resignation, Sopte said that he
would be joining Congress party.
This was the second jolt for BJP in Goa as party?s
Bicholim MLA, Rajesh Patnekar, had resigned on September 12
to join Congress.
The BJP had recently appointed Sopte as an election
campaign manager for the ensuing state legislative assembly
election for north Goa.
Addressing a press conference, Sopte said that the
Congress has assured him a ticket from Mandrem constituency in
the forthcoming elections.
"Congress leaders like Jagmeet Singh Brar, Chief Minister
Digambar Kamat and Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president
Subhash Shirodkar have given me an assurance for ticket from
Mandrem constituency," Sopte said.
However, Shirodkar later rubbished his claim stating
that the party has not committed any ticket to anyone.
Major part of Sopte`s constituency has been merged with
Mandrem constituency, which is currently represented by BJP
Goa Unit President Laxmikant Parsekar.
Sopte said that BJP believes in one man one post but
still allowed Parsekar to continue as BJP Chief and also has
cleared his name for the Mandrem seat.
"I had to quit because of my political future. I would
not have any future in BJP," he said.
BJP is the main opposition party in the state legislative
assembly. It has now 12 MLAs in the assembly.
