BJP demands CBI probe into Goa illegal mining
BJP on Sunday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and an immediate CBI probe into the issue.
New Delhi: Alleging rampant illegal mining
in Congress-ruled Goa, BJP on Sunday demanded the resignation of
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and an immediate CBI probe into
"With illegal mining issue in Goa having come to the fore
and questions being raised about the role of Chief Minister,
it is important for CBI to investigate the nexus between him
and the mining companies that have severely flouted the rules
of legitimate mining business and transgressed into illegal
mining which is estimated to be over Rs 10,000 crore," party
national secretary Arti Mehra said in a press release.
Noting that Kamat is also the Minister for Mines in the
state, she said, "BJP demands an immediate CBI probe against
Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and his resignation."
Mehra said, "Government records over the last five years
indicate the state has been witnessing largescale illegal
mining where either the mining companies have not got
environmental clearances from the Wildlife and Forest
Authorities or have extracted ore beyond the permissible
limits of extraction."
Citing instances, Mehra said illegal mining is
flourishing in Goa under the patronage of the Chief Minister
"It is clearly evident that illegal mining in the state
has prospered on account of his reign in that ministry. While
the Supreme Court has appointed the Shah Commission to
investigate into the illegal mining in Goa; it is important
for the Centre to conduct a CBI Inquiry into the same," she
