Panaji: Terming drug abuse in Goa a
matter of great concern, the Goa Church on Saturday said that it was
no more restricted to tourist places but moving toward the
Council for Social Justice and Peace (CSJP), a wing of
Goa Church, in a statement issued on the eve of International
Day against Drug Abuse said the abuse is not restricted to the
seashores and tourist places but was moving toward the
hinterland due to inaction by local police.
"The CSJP voices its deep concern over the rampant
abuse of drugs in Goan society... while the abuse of drugs
continues along the coastal belt and is now making steady
progress inland, the CSJP is equally concerned with the
aggressive promotion and easy availability of alcohol being
encouraged by the Government which is adversely impacting Goan
homes and industry," CSJP executive secretary Maverick
Voicing concerns over branding Goa as a cheap liquor
destination, he said that while both the Goa government and
the liquor industry benefited from selling cheap booze in the
state, they ignored setting up of sufficient support system
for those afflicted by addiction.
