Panaji: A Goa Police constable allegedly
involved with drug peddlers, today surrendered before a court
with law enforcers saying his arrest was likely to lead them
to more links in police-drug peddler nexus case.
"The arrest (of Sanjay Parab) will lead us to more
links in this case," police spokesman Atmaram Deshpande told
Parab, the constable who was on the run since first
week of March, today surrendered before a court in Mapusa
town, 10 km from here.
Crime branch immediately placed Parab under arrest and
got seven days police custody by producing him before the
Deshpande said the delay in arresting him was not a
police failure. "Parab had to surrender because he had run
out of avenues and police had pressurised him to give up," the
Parab is the seventh policeman to be arrested in drug
peddler police nexus case. Besides Parab six other policemen
including Inspector Ashish Shirodkar and police Sub inspector
Punaji Gawas have been arrested under the Narcotics Drugs and
Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. A head constable and three
constables have also been nabbed.
The Crime branch is investigating the nexus after
alleged Israeli drug dealer Yaniv Benaim alias Atala
reportedly confessed to his links with the police.
