Goa CLP wants June 2012 polls to be held early

Even though the Assembly polls in Goa are scheduled to take place in June 2012, the CLP wants the state legislative assembly to be dissolved early to facilitate the polls to be held by February-March 2012.

Panaji: Even though the Assembly polls in
Goa are scheduled to take place in June 2012, the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) wants the state legislative assembly to be dissolved early to facilitate the polls to be held by
February-March 2012, a senior leader said.

Deputy Speaker of Goa legislative assembly Mauvin
Godinho, who is also a head of election campaign in Goa, has
said that the Congress legislators favour elections by March,
2012.
"Panchayat elections in Goa are scheduled in March 2012
and majority of Congress legislators want that the assembly
polls should be held before that," Godinho, representing
Cortalim constituency, said.

He said that in order to make the early polls possible, the state assembly has to be dissolved in October/November to prepare for the early elections.

Congress has 20 legislators in the 40-seat legislative assembly.
Godinho also said that Congressmen in Goa want the party to contest all the 40 constituencies on its own and without joining hands with the Nationalist Congress party (NCP).

"But if the high command tells us that we will have an alliance with NCP, then we are left with no other choice," he added.

The last state legislative assembly elections were held in Goa in 2007, in which, the Congress-NCP combine managed to clinch majority seats to form the government.
