Goa DGP prescribes Gandhigiri for police force

After screening `Singham` for his force, Goa DGP now wants the policemen to be empathetic with the common men.

Panji: After screening Bollywood flick
`Singham` for his force, Goa DGP now wants the policemen to be
"empathetic" with the common people and adopt Gandhian values
in their day-to-day life for a image make-over.

The DGP Aditya Arya had last month arranged a special
show of the flick in which Ajay Devgan plays character of a
police protagonist who takes on the anti-social elements.
On the occasion of the 142nd birth anniversary of
Mahatma Gandhi, Arya today unveiled a portrait of the Father
of Nation, made by artist Subodh Kerkar, in his cabin.

"I want that they (policemen) should be empathetic
with the public who approach (them) with their grievances. It
will be obligatory on the part of police to have community
interaction," Arya told reporters in presence of senior police
officers, adding the policemen should adhere to the values of
Mahatma Gandhi in their day-to-day life.
Let the policemen be seen as part of their families by
common people, he said.

The DGP said he would ask the beat constables to have
regular meetings with the villagers and village panchayats.

The department has also decided to rope in youngsters
by setting up a unique police cadre on par with the National
Social Service (NSS) and National Cadet Corps (NCC).

"There is fear about policemen in everyone right from
childhood. We want to change this perception," Arya said,
adding even fishermen would be involved in the exercise.

The DGP said the thought that `every citizen is a
policemen without uniform` has to be percolated down to the
common people.

Arya said he would urge the state government to enact
a law on par with the Kerala Police which makes them a
people-friendly force.

When pointed out that alcoholism has been a major
problem faced by the over-stressed force, Arya said "we will
have Brahamakumaris delivering discourse to policemen on
October 13 and October 14".
