Panaji: The Goa government will press for a postal stamp to be issued in honour of architect Charles Correa, who passed away after a brief illness last week.

Speaking to IANS on Monday Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza said that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government in Goa will propose Correa's name because of his professional contribution to Goa and the country. Correa hailed from Goa.

"It will be an honour for us to have a postage stamp in his honour. We will certainly recommend his name to the philatelic advisory committee of the central government," D'Souza said.

Correa, known for his unique style of architecture, was credited with several landmark projects across the country.

The Padma Vibhushan award winning architect, who died on June 17 after a brief illness at the age of 84 in Mumbai, was also conferred the Gomant Vibhushan award in 2011 by the Goa government.

He was instrumental in preparing a draft land-use plan for the state a few years ago.
