Nadia was seen in market around noon on day of death: Friend

A close friend of Nadia Torrado`s family today claimed that she was seen at the market interacting with many people a few hours before noon on May 15.

Panaji: A close friend of Nadia Torrado`s
family today claimed that she was seen at the market
interacting with many people a few hours before noon on May
15.

The claim assumes significance as Nadia is said to have
`consumed` poison around 9 am and was rushed to a hospital by
her family around 3 pm and as police has arrested her mother
Sonia on charges of abetment of suicide of her daughter,
culpable homicide and destruction of evidence.

"Nadia was in the market after 9.30 am and returned back
home at around 11.50 am. She had interacted with many people
including a newspaper vendor," Maria Mascarenhas, a close
friend of Torrado family told reporters here.

Mascarenhas is nursing Nadia`s brother Konrad at the
Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour after he went into
depression following his mother`s arrest.

Former Goa tourism minister Fransis Mickey Pacheco and
Sonia have been arrested by crime branch in connection with
Nadia`s death.

Nadia, who `took` poison on May 15, had died on May 30
after being treated at various hospitals in Goa, Thane
(Mumbai) and Chennai.

Police has said that Nadia had consumed poison at 9 am
and was shifted to a hospital at 3 pm. The investigating
agencies had questioned the delay in taking her to the
hospital by the family members, to which her mother Sonia has
said it was only at 2 pm that they came to know about Nadia
consuming poison.

The Torrado family has rejected the police theory of
Sonia`s involvement in the death of her daughter and
destruction of evidence.

Lawyers representing Pacheco had earlier stated that the
former minister had rushed to her place in the afternoon when
he was informed about Nadia consuming poison.

"She was immediately shifted to Apollo hospital by the
family members along with Pacheco without any delay," Amit
Palekar, Pacheco`s legal counsel, claimed.
