Panaji: Police personnel armed with alcometers may be posted in close proximity of Goa bars to curb drunken driving, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told the assembly Wednesday.

"We may have to post police outside bars... so, if they step out and sit behind the wheel, they can be checked," Parrikar said.

He said he was serious about clamping down on drunken driving, a cause of several accidents in the state.

"If you are drunk, don`t drive. Do anything else. Drunken driving is not permitted," the chief minister said.

He also said liquor-vending outlets which are open till late hours, may also have to arrange for taxis for inebriated patrons. He said the police department was in the process of procuring more alcometers to check drunk drivers.
The traffic police booked and prosecuted nearly 600 drunk drivers in less than a month, a statement issued by the state government`s department of information and publicity said Saturday.
Drunken driving on Independence Day night alone accounted for 26 offences, the statement said.
