Ahmedabad: Spelling more trouble for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the state’s High Court on Wednesday issued a contempt notice to his government for delaying compensation to 56 people whose shops were destroyed during the communal riots of 2002.
According to reports, the High Court slammed the BJP government for failing to comply with its order, passed last year, related to compensation of the shop owners.
The court asked the Modi government to explain why it has still not handed over the money to those affected.
Last week, the High Court ordered the government to fund the repair of nearly 600 religious buildings that were targeted during the riots, the worst in independent India.
The high court ruling comes on a day when a Metropolitan court in Ahemdabad is set to pronounce its decision on Modi’s alleged role in the Gulbarg Society massacre during the 2002 Gujarat riots.
According to reports, the court will also decide if the SIT probe report on the Gulbarg Society massacre should be made public or not.
The court will also pass its order on whether or not the SIT, which has reportedly given a clean chit Modi, should be given more time to submit the pertinent documents before it.
