60-year-old woman cremating bodies since 20 years

Vadodara: A 60-year-old woman is engaged
in cremation of bodies at Kailasnath crematorium at Valsad,
about 180 kms from here, for the past 20 years.
Gauriben Gopalbhai Patel said when she got marred 40
years ago, she never dreamt of engaging in such type of
activity for earning livelihood.

He husband assisted his father Machhabhai in this
activity. After the death of Machhabhai, she started assisting
her husband Gopalbhai, but after he passed away in 1998, she
has been doing it on her own.
She gets a monthly salary of Rs 1,000 from the trust
that runs the crematorium. "I have no choice but to continue
this activity to feed my children," Gauriben said.
