Ahmedabad: A local court on Thursday asked suspended
IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt to appear before it on November 16 in
connection with a complaint against him for allegedly
furnishing false information with the intention of evading
summons issued to him.
The complaint was filed in the court last month by ACP N
C Patel, the investigating officer in the case against Bhatt
who is accused of threatening a police constable KD Pant.
Based on the complaint, Additional Chief Judicial
Magistrate BG Doshi issued summons to Bhatt asking him to
remain present in the court on November 16.
In the complaint, Patel has alleged that Bhatt was issued
summons to remain present before him on September 30, but he
did not do so and wrote a letter saying that he was to appear
before Nanavati Commission probing the 2002 riots case.
However, a probe revealed that Bhatt never went to the
Nanavati panel, neither did he have any hearing there, he
added.
Based on this, Patel filed a complaint against the
suspended IPS officer under section 172 (absconding to avoid
service of summons) and 177 (furnishing false information) of
the Indian Penal Code (IPC), in the court.
Bhatt was arrested on September 30 in connection with an
FIR filed against him by Pant for allegedly threatening,
wrongfully confining and restraining him and making him sign a
false affidavit.
The affidavit was in connection with Bhatt`s presence at
the February 27, 2002 meeting called by Chief Minister
Narendra Modi after the Godhra train burning incident.
Bhatt, who had alleged the complicity of Modi in the 2002
riots, was granted bail by a local court on October 17.
