Ahmedabad: In a setback to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress on Wednesday won the Mansa Assembly bypoll.

DD Patel of the BJP lost the seat to Babuji Thakor of Congress.

Over 75 per cent turnout was recorded in the voting held on Monday and political observers said the unexpected development could be an indication of anti-incumbency.

The Congress’ victory is being seen as a setback to the ruling BJP as the latter had been winning the seat since 1995.

The BJP was confident of winning the Mansa seat.

The by-poll in Mansa was required as former speaker and BJP MLA Mangaldas Patel had died.

Though the term of the newly-elected MLA will only be for around eight months, as the Assembly polls are scheduled in December later this year, both, the main political parties -Congress and BJP- had made this by-poll a "prestige issue".
