Valsad: A nine-year-old girl was mauled to death by stray dogs when she had gone to answer nature's call in Karadiva village of the district.

The incident took place yesterday when Kenny Patel had gone to relieve herself and was dragged by around eight to nine stray dogs, village sarpanch Ramu Patel said.

The villagers then rescued the girl, who was unconscious, and took her first to a primary health centre and then to the government-run Kasturba Gandhi hospital. Both the hospitals did not have injection for rabies so she was shifted to Valsad civil hospital, he added.

Manoj Das of Valsad civil hospital said there were atleast 20 bites on her body and she could not be saved as there was a delay in bringing her to the hospital.

"Mother of the deceased girl Bhanu Patel, who is an ASHA worker, had applied to the government for subsidy to build a toilet two months ago, but the application was still pending," said District Development Officer in Valsad G C Brahmbhatt.

Kadiva village has around 110 houses, but 50 of them do not have toilets, he said.

According to the sarpanch, a case of accidental death in this regard has been registered in Valsad police station.
