Gandhinagar: Gujarat`s capital Gandhinagar
began functioning as a Municipal Corporation from Saturday,
Chief Minister Narendra Modi announced on the state`s 50th
foundation day.

"Gandhinagar which was a just a city with government
offices so far, would now become a municipal corporation, 8th
in the state from today which is our foundation day," Modi
said.

He said administrators of the municipal corporation would
be soon appointed and its operations would be handed over to
them.

"Now the people of Gandhinagar will have the
administration in their own hands and a right to chose their
administrators," Modi said.

The state government in the state Assembly had last month
announced its decision to make Gandhinagar a municipal
corporation.

Earlier, the Gujarat High Court in September 2009 had
directed the state government to set up municipal corporation
in the capital city, following a petition by charitable trust
Gandhinagar Shaher Jagrut Nagrik Parishad (GSJNP) in the High
Court.
