Ahmedabad: Former DGP of Gujarat RB Sreekumar has sought intervention of Union Home Minister P Chidambaram for appointment of a DGP in the state, alleging that absence of a full-time leader has "crippled" the police machinery here.

In a letter written on March 15 to the Union Home Minister, Sreekumar has also requested him to direct the Narendra Modi government to fill up vacancies at senior levels through promotions, within a prescribed time frame.

General of Police) in Gujarat since September-2010 has immensely crippled the quality of service of the state police, particularly of the IPS officers," he said in the letter made available on Sunday.

Police, like any force in uniform, put under regimental discipline, functions on the strength and stamina of the hierarchal command and control system, he stated.

"An enfeebled leader, not empowered with the rank and position intrinsic to the post of DGP, will never inspire confidence in the rank and file," Sreekumar added.

The Gujarat police is currently headed by Incharge DGP Chitranjan Singh after retirement of SS Khandwawala, in September 2010. The state does not have a single police officer in the rank of director-general (DG) with four DG posts lying vacant.
