Ahmedabad: Gujarat's progress was touching new heights like a kite soaring high up in the sky, Chief Minister Narendra Modi said today while greeting people on the occasion of kite festival -- 'Makar Sankranti'.

An upbeat Modi, who recently garnered a record Rs 20.83 lakh crore in investment during the recently concluded Vibrant Gujarat Summit, termed Makar Sankranti as an important festival for the state.

"Gujarat is progressing like a kite flying high in the sky," the chief minister said, who later flew kite from a roof-top with the locals for a brief period.

"Yesterday, I was with some of the biggest industrialists of the state. Today, I am with underprivileged people of my constituency," Modi said while visiting Parasmani Society in Amraiwadi area, part of his Assembly constituency Maninagar.

People across the state celebrated the festival of kites with great fervour. They were seen on the roof-tops and terraces, flying kites with their kin and friends.

Business establishments, government offices and shops remained closed in most parts of the state.

On Uttarayan, people here feasted on 'Undhyu', a preparation of mixed vegetables and freshly ground spices, along with puri and 'jalebies'.

Besides this special dish, Gujaratis indulged in popular snack 'Lilva Kachori' -- a deep fried kachori with filling of minced green tuvar, chilly and select spices.
