Ketan Desai to contest GU senate elections

Tainted former MCI chief Ketan Desai will be contesting Gujarat University senate elections.

Ahmedabad: Making an attempt to come back in
power circles, tainted former chief of Medical Council of India (MCI) Ketan Desai will be contesting Gujarat University senate elections.

Desai has submitted a nomination form for the `medicine graduate seat`, university officials said adding he had won the polls in 2005 from the `medical faculty seat`.

The only other candidate, who is in fray for the same seat, is head of Civil Hospital`s Orthopaedic Department HP Bhalodia, they said.

Desai`s contesting elections is seen here as an attempt by him to make a come back in power circles.
"Senate election is a democratic process. We cannot deny anyone the right to participate in it. He has filled up form as a medical graduate and not as a medical faculty," Gujarat University Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi said.

Desai was arrested on April 22 by CBI when he was chief of MCI along with three others for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs two crore to give permission to Gyan Sagar Medical College in Patiala, Punjab, to recruit a fresh batch of students.

CBI has registered a disproportionate assets case against him, his wife and mother in May for having assets worth over Rs 24 crore, far more than the known sources of their income.
