The Gujarat Government will build a memorial near Bhuj in memory of the people who were killed in the devastating earthquake of January 26, 2001.

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Government will build a memorial near Bhuj in memory of the people who were killed in the devastating earthquake of January 26, 2001.

The memorial, `Smritivan`, having a museum, convention centre, sunset point and eco park, will be constructed atop 406 acres of the historic Bhujia Dungar near Bhuj, the epicentre of the quake that killed 13,805 persons, an official statement said here on Tuesday night.

A presentation of the project was made before Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other top bureaucrats today by architects P V Doshi and Raju Katpaliya, it said.

People from different states shall visit the memorial on every January 26 to pay tributes, Modi said.

A proposal to start adventure sports in the adjoining lake at the site was also made.

Bhuj in the district headquarters of Kutch. The city surrounds a hillock, known as Bhujia Hill, which also has an old fort.

Over a million structures were damaged or destroyed in the natural disaster and these included historic buildings and places of tourist attraction.
