Middle class girls choose beauty over health: Narendra Modi Zeenews Bureau

New Delhi: The usually measured Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has trigged a controversy by blaming vegetarianism and figure conscious Gujarati girls for high rate of malnutrition in the state.

In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, Narendra Modi said, "Gujarat is by and large a vegetarian state. And secondly, Gujarat is also a middle-class state. The middle class is more beauty-conscious than health-conscious—that is a challenge. If a mother tells her daughter to have milk, they'll have a fight—she'll tell her mother, 'I won't drink milk. I'll get fat."

However, Modi accepted that drastic change is needed to tackle the problem of malnutrition. “Gujarat is going to come up as a model in this also,” he said.

Various statistics have pointed out that nutrition levels in Gujarat, particularly in its tribal, rural and female population is very high.

The BJP leader also used the opportunity to highlight his administration success in economic growth and ensuring adequate power supply.

Criticising the Centre for the power blackout across the country last month, the Chief Minister said the central government should learn from Gujarat government and do the needed changes in the power sector.

He pitched in for liberalisation process that began in the 1990s saying that “The tragedy is that there's no liberalisation going on."

"Government has no business to be in business," Modi told Wall Street Journal.

Malnutrition is a major problem among poor people such as tribals, Dalits and rural muslims. And the Chief Minister of Gujarat attributes malnutrition to beauty consciousness of small children. I think let him confine himself to Gujarat and let him not venture to rule from Delhi. That will be better for the country.

If after so much he has done for Gujrat, if you are blaming Modi ji for malnutirition, then first point your fingers at Sonia and Rahul for keeping India hungry and malnourished.

Media has developed a habit of creating monster out of nothing. And if relates to Mr.narendra Modi, they just not demand anything more. Its a fact, not of Gujarat alone, that middle class runs for short term success. Whether it is the men folk or female folk. Hence, nothing unusal in Mr.Modi assessment for reasons of malnutrition among Gujarati women.

I did not see anything amazing or contraversial in his statement. It is a simple statement pointing at possible reasons for malnutrition and promised to come out with a model to tackle the issue. What is wrong in it? Please do not try to interpret it too much!!

Modiji ne koi galat nahin kaha.sahi to kaha hai.Girls need size zero figure at the cost of nutrition. And this provides enough fodder for our pseudo secular media to start a TRP driven debate. The intention is clear ,more TRP and appeasement of their political master the Congress party.

What the hell these news channels want. I am completely unable to understand why it is a controversial statement. What he is saying is completely right. There is a competition in girls for looking slim and figureish but in that competition they usually forget that their body requires a nutritious (if not healthy) diet. If a mom says to her girl that you should take milk, she deny it due to fear of getting fat. Secondly according to article 19 (1) of Indian Constitution, all Indian citizens have the right to freedom of speech and expression so if he is expressing his opinion about something, what is wrong in that. He is not violating any rule. Media should understand, they are the voice and eyes of a billion Indian people so whatever they will serve, it will directly affect their thought process b`coz 70% of Indian population don`t understand these political complexities. There is much more to show and expose. Thanks

Dear Bihar,It is a wonder you advice people from other state and specially people of Gujarat to live with dignity and integrity. We all know that Bihar was a disgrace and a drain on our national exchequer, for years under Lulu Prasad and his better half. Even today people from Bihar are living like dogs condition in all parts of India including Mumbai to earn their livelihood since there is no source of income in Bihar. They were in total darkness for two day because of no power and electricity. First let your Cheap Minister Nitish Kumar come out of the shekels of vote bank politics appeasing Muslim community, let him win the election of development agenda if he is worth his salt and then take on Mr. Modi of Gujarat.

It`s become fashion to say against CM.He meant to say it`s better that girls of Gujrat keep themselves healthy. he means nothing more than that.

I am amazed to hear such comments from a prospective Prime ministerial candidate to make such comments. Can such people be really capable to lead our country ?
