Ahmedabad: On the occasion of the Eid al-Fitr festival, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Friday wished everyone in the country happiness, peace, prosperity and good health.
On microblogging website Twitter, Modi said: "Eid Mubarak! May everyone in the country be blessed with happiness, peace, prosperity and good health".
Muslims across the country are celebrating Eid al-Fitr with great fervour and gaiety. The festival marks the end of the period of fasting in the holy month of Ramadan.
In Delhi, light rain and cool winds made for ideal conditions for festivity.
The Eid al-Fitr holiday includes three days of festivities after a month of prayer and dawn-to-dusk fasting for Ramadan, when observant Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex as a way to test their faith.
Not all countries begin celebrations on the same day. The festival was celebrated across Gulf yesterday.
Muslims believe God revealed the first verses of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad during Ramadan, which starts with the sighting of the new moon. The Muslim lunar calendar moves back through the seasons, meaning Ramadan starts 11 days earlier each year under the Western calendar.
