Vadodara: A member of the notorious Irani gang allegedly involved in several cases of gold jewellery theft and other crimes, was arrested in the city, police said today.
The accused, Sarfaraz Irani, was arrested from Gorwa locality here last evening, they said.
"He was riding a motorcycle that carried Maharashtra registration number. When police stopped him and demanded original documents of the vehicle, he failed to do so. He was subsequently taken into police custody," ACP (North) Leena Patil said.
During the interrogation, he confessed to have committed several crimes, including seven cases in which the gang members duped elderly women and stole their gold jewellery in the city in the past few months.
"The estimated stolen jewellery is worth Rs 8.71 lakh," Patil said.
During his questioning, Sarfaraz also revealed the names of his aides-- Samir Irani, Ghulam Irani and Raju Sheikh-- who operate from Maharashtra.
According to Patil, Vadodara police will form a team to nab the remaining members of the gang from Maharashtra.
"Their arrests may also help in detecting five cases of robbery in Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur," Patil said.
