Over 26,000 criminal cases pending in Gujarat High Court: Sibal

Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday informed Independent Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani that there are 52,970 civil cases and 26,559 criminal cases pending in the Gujarat High Court as on March 31, 2012.

Vadodara: Union Law Minister Kapil Sibal on Monday informed Independent Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani that there are 52,970 civil cases and 26,559 criminal cases pending in the Gujarat High Court as on March 31, 2012.
Sibal`s reply was in response to a question about pending cases and strength of judges in the court asked by Nathwani. As per available data, 34,01,193 civil and 9,39,674 criminal cases lie pending in 21 high courts of the country, which means a total 43,40,867 cases are pending in high courts as on March 31, 2012. As against the approved strength of 906 judges in various high courts of the country, 631 high court judges are in service. The Gujarat High Court had an approved strength of 29 permanent judges and 13 additional judges, with 11 positions vacant, he said. PTI
