Parents of a two-month-old baby girl claimed that their child died today within 48 hours after she was administered polio vaccine by local civic authorities here.

The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) officials,
however, refuted the allegations made by the parents of the
Two-months-old Khusbhu of Sriram society at Amroli
developed high fever and infection within 24 hours of the
polio drops administration, following which she was rushed to
a private clinic and later to new civil hospital, where she
died after brief treatment.
"After giving drops, health workers gave us tablets
and asked us to give it to Khusbhu if she catches fever. We
gave her the specified dose, but her condition worsened on
Friday morning. We don?t know what happened to her suddenly.
The only medicine we gave was the tablet given to us by the
health worker," the girl`s father Shailesh Limbachia said.
Limbachia alleged that seven more children in their
society fell ill after consuming the vaccine.
He said that the health worker was using outdated
Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Health and Hospitals)
Hemant Desai of SMC denied that vaccines were outdated.
Desai said that entire batch of polio drops were
distributed by State government and if they were of
substandard, few more children would have died due to it.
"It seems that Khusbhu did not receive primary
treatment, when needed. One case in 10 lakh cases arrives,
where a child dies after consuming polio drops. We are waiting
for post-mortem reports and if something wrong is found,
appropriate action will be taken in due course," Desai added.
