Ahmedabad: Lashing out at the Congress- led UPA government for the hike in petrol price, the Gujarat government on Sunday said the move has affected the common people who were already reeling under inflation.

"The unprecedented overnight increase of Rs 5 per litre in the petrol price by the Congress-led UPA has breached the trust of people," state spokesperson and Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas said in a statement.

"This has exposed the erratic policy of the union government on fuel pricing," he said.

Vyas alleged that the union government, under the garb of rise in international crude prices, passed the burden of PSU oil companies onto the common people.

The consumption of petrol in Gujarat is pegged close to 11.50 crore litres per month and at around 138 crore litres per annum, he said.

Considering the growing economy of the state, the hike in fuel prices would levy an additional burden of Rs 725 crore on the people of Gujarat, Vyas said.
