Ahmedabad: A PIL seeking direction from the Gujarat High Court to state government to recover Rs 60 crore, allegedly spent on the three-day 'Sadbhavana' fast, from Chief Minister Narendra Modi was withdrawn today after the division bench termed it 'premature and baseless'.

The PIL, filed by NGO Vikalp Trust on Monday, sought court's directions to Gujarat Government authorities to explain about the expenses for the three-day 'Sadbhavana' fast observed by Modi at the Gujarat University Convention Centre here.

The petition had also sought recovery of Rs 60 crore, which it said was spent on the event, from Modi claiming the fast was a 'drama' staged by the chief minister for publicity and to gain political mileage on tax payers' money.

A division bench of Chief Justice A L Dave and Justice J B Pardiwala heard the matter at length for over two hours and then observed that the PIL was premature and baseless.

The Bench further said that the PIL lacked credible information and was not legally maintainable.

The court said that PIL lacked basic information on the expenditure of the event and on the basis of allegations made by the petitioner and his demand for recovery of money.

It also observed that the PIL was based on media reports and the petitioner had not even verified it with facts.

The state government also opposed the PIL saying that it lacked merits.
