Prajapati encounter: CBI team arrives, may visit the spot

A CBI team headed by Joint Director, P Kandaswami, and consisting of DIG Amithabh Thakur, arrived at the agency`s office in Gandhinagar to work out the line of investigation in the 2006 Tulsiram Prajapati fake encounter case.

Ahmedabad: A CBI team headed by Joint
Director, P Kandaswami, and consisting of DIG Amithabh Thakur,
on Thursday arrived at the agency`s office in Gandhinagar to work
out the line of investigation in the 2006 Tulsiram Prajapati
fake encounter case.

The CBI registered an FIR in the case on April 29,
following Supreme Court`s directives.

Prajapati was a key witness in the case of 2005 killing
of Sohrabuddin Sheikh and his wife Kausarbi in a fake police
encounter.

Kandaswami and Thakur held a meeting with the probe team,
sources said.

They would examine the papers obtained from the state CID
which was investigating the case earlier.

Supreme Court transferred the case to CBI following a
petition by Prajapati`s mother, Narmada Bai.

Sources said that CBI team was also likely to visit the
Chhapri village near Ambaji in Banaskantha, where encounter
took place, and recreate the scene.

CBI filed the FIR on April 29 in Mumbai against "the
police officials of Gujarat and Rajasthan state and others for
their alleged involvement in criminal conspiracy of wrongful
restraint, wrongful confinement, abduction and murder of Tulsi
Prajapati and causing disappearance of evidence in the matter
thereof".

Narmada Bai had alleged in her petition that her son was
killed in a fake encounter by the Gujarat police because he
was a key eyewitness in Sohrabuddin Sheikh case of 2005.

Prajapati, a close aide of Sohrabuddin -- an alleged
gangster -- was himself killed in an encounter near Chapri on
December 28, 2006.
