Rajkot: Enraged over the act of Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh who wiped his shoe with a cotton garland at a public function, the BJP on Thursday
burnt his effigy at Tricaun Baug area of the city.
Ramesh kicked up a controversy by cleaning his shoe with a garland of spun cotton given to him as a welcome gesture by Congress members at a public function in Kolayat area of Bikaner district in Rajasthan on July 25.
The city BJP president Dhansukh Bhanderi said the minister insulted the Father of the Nation by cleaning his shoe with the cotton garland.
Ramesh has hurt sentiments of lakhs of people who believe in Mahatma Gandhi`s thoughts and for his act the minister should resign from his post, Bhanderi said.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was also present at the function at Kolayat area in Bikaner where sanction letters of the first instalment of grant aid under Mukhyamantri Gramin BPL Awas Yojana were distributed.
The cotton garland was offered to Ramesh by Congress office-bearers Rameshwar Dudi and Rampyari Vishnoi.
