Student's suicide case: NHRC notice to Gujarat Police

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the police department of Gujarat's Banaskantha district over the suicide of a student after being allegedly beaten up by schoolteachers.

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the police department of Gujarat's Banaskantha district over the suicide of a student after being allegedly beaten up by schoolteachers.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, the Commission has issued notice to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Banaskantha, Gujarat to enquire into the incident and submit a report within four weeks.

The notice was issued after the Commission took suo motu cognizance of media reports that a 16-year-old student of Class-X of Gayatri Vidyalaya in Tharad Taluka of Banaskantha allegedly committed suicide after he was confined and severely beaten up in the school premises by four teachers for damaging a camera of the school.

The reports were carried on February 18 this year.

Reportedly, the victim was under trauma after the incident and had narrated this to his father a few hours before he killed himself. The police had registered a case against the four teachers on the complaint of the parents.
