Chandigarh: The Congress ministry in Haryana
was expanded here on Friday with induction of four Cabinet
ministers taking the total strength to 14.
This was the first expansion of the ministry after
Bhupinder Singh Hooda was sworn in as Chief Minister on
October 25, 2009 following the Assembly elections in which the
Congress with 40 seats fell short of the majority in the
90-member state Assembly by five seats.
Congress had then secured the "unconditional" support of
seven Independents to cross the magical figure of 45.
Later the party had also secured the support of five of
the six legislators of the Haryana Janhit Congress-BL whose
chief Kuldip Bishnoi was left alone. The lone BSP member also
lent his support to the Congress.
Two of these legislators - Rao Narinder Singh and Satpal
Sangwan - were sworn in alongwith Harmohinder Singh Chatha and
Kiran Chaudhary, both Congress.
They were administered the oath of office and secrecy by
Governor Jagan Nath Pahadia at the swearing-in-ceremony at the
Raj Bhawan here. Chatha had resigned as Speaker shortly before
The Chief Minister, his ministerial colleagues and senior
civil and police officers were among those present.
Congress emerged as the single largest party winning 40
seats in 2009 while INLD finished with 31 seats. The
remaining 12 seats were shared by Haryana Janhit Congress-BL
six, BJP four and BSP and SAD one each.
