Sirsa: A local court on Friday ordered the Haryana government to pay Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the kin of a person who succumbed to injuries after being mercilessly beaten by police officials in custody over 12 years ago.

Delivering the judgement, Additional District and Sessions Judge Neelima Shangla also directed the Superintendent of Police to register an FIR against then Sub-inspector Sat Naryan and Assistant Sub-inspector Ram Chander charging them with murder of Darshan Singh.

The deceased was beaten mercilessly which caused his death on July 6, 1999.

Holding the policemen responsible for the custodial death, the judge ordered Haryana government to pay Rs 5 lakh as compensation along with nine per cent interest from the date of filing the suit till its realisation.
