Haryana for nationalisation of water system

New Delhi: Haryana, which is at loggerheads
with Punjab over the issue of sharing river water, today
favoured nationalisation of the water system for better
conservation of the scarce commodity.

"In view of water crisis being witnessed in the entire
country, it is high time that the water system is nationalised
for better conservation of the commodity.

"More so because it is a national asset and every
individual has an equal right over it," state Chief Minister
Bhupinder Singh Hooda told reporters on the sidelines of a
book release function here.

The Haryana Government has over the years been stressing
on securing for the state its share of river waters through
the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal, a move opposed by the
Punjab government.

The canal, built in parts of Punjab, has never been
allowed to carry waters from the state`s rivers to
neighbouring Haryana.

A resolution by the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD)
in Punjab last week, demanding payment of royalty to Punjab by neighbouring states using its rivers, has snow balled into
a major controversy involving the two states.

To a question on the flood-like situation, Hooda said
various steps have been taken on war-footing basis in the
areas of the state, especially in Ambala and Kurukshetra
districts.

Earlier, Vice-President Hamid Ansari released a book
"Vikas ki Udaan Abhi Baaki Hai" (The flight of development is
yet to complete) written by Hooda at the function.
