Incentive to promote inter-caste marriages in Haryana

Chandigarh: In a bid to promote communal
harmony, Haryana Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes Welfare
Department has implemented a scheme to promote inter-caste
marriages.

Under this scheme, an incentive of Rs 50,000 is given to
a non Scheduled Castes bride or groom for marrying a member
belonging to Scheduled Castes.

Out of this amount, Rs 20,000 is given in cash and the
remaining Rs 30,000 is deposited in a joint fixed deposit
account in the name of the newly married couple for six years.

As many as 289 eligible couples have availed of the
scheme during last three years, taking home more than Rs 1.4
crore.

Explaining the terms and conditions of the scheme, an
official spokesman said here today that one could avail the
facility provided both spouses were the citizens of India,
either should be Scheduled Caste.

He or she should be a permanent resident of Haryana and
must not have taken any benefit under a similar scheme.

The beneficiary of the scheme is not provided the benefit
if he or she remarries. One can apply for the incentive within
one year from the date of marriage.
