Hansi: The death of a 22-year-old youth inside the lock-up of the city police station in Hansi triggered mob violence on Monday, during which a police outpost was set on fire and many vehicles were damaged.
Police had to use force to bring the situation under control.
The youth, Billu, was found dead hanging from the ventilator of the lock-up in the Hansi police station in Hisar district late on Sunday night, an official said.
While police said he committed suicide, the people accused police of torturing Billu to death and went on a rampage.
The mob set fire to the Sisaipul police outpost on Hansi-Barwala road and a police jeep, and damaged six motor-cycles parked near the Hansi police station.
People also pelted stones at the police.
According to police, they arrested Billu and Krishan on Sunday for fighting at a public place in the town.
Billu committed suicide by hanging himself from the ventilator of the lock-up late on Sunday night, a police official said.
Accusing the police of torturing Billu to death, the protesters demanded action against the guilty officials.
"We have deployed sufficient police force to control the situation. We are looking into the matter and will ensure justice", Amrik Singh, deputy superintendent of police for Hansi, told reporters.
The district police chief, Hanif Qureshi, has also reached the spot and assured the agitators that appropriate action will be taken against the guilty.
