Shadi Lal Batra files nomination for RS

Outgoing Rajya Sabha member from Haryana Shadi Lal Batra today filed his nomination for elections to the next term.

Chandigarh: Outgoing Rajya Sabha member from
Haryana Shadi Lal Batra today filed his nomination for
elections to the next term.

Supported by the Haryana Congress MLAs and independent
MLAs in the state Assembly, Batra, filed his nomination on the
last day of filing of papers today.

He was accompanied by Chief Mini
ster Bhupinder Singh
Hooda, Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee President, Phool
Chand Mullana, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Randeep Singh
Surjewala and several other Ministers, Chief Parliamentary
Secretaries and Legislators of the Congress Party and the
independents.

Batra, considered a staunch Hooda loyalist and a
prominent Punjabi community leader, filed two sets of his
nomination papers.

Both the sets had ten Legislators proposing his name
including Hooda, Surjewala, Bharat Bhushan Batra, Savitri
Jindal, Anand Kaushik, Sultan Singh, Prahlad Singh Gillankhera
and Satpal Sangwan.

Later while talking to media persons, Hooda said that
candidature of Batra has been supported unanimously by the
legislators of the Congress and the independents.

He said that the Congress Legislative Party, which met
here today has passed a resolution thanking the AICC
President, Sonia Gandhi for nominating Batra for election to
the Council of States.

Having twice served the State as a Member of the Haryana
Legislative Assembly from Rohtak, Batra also remained Chairman
of the Haryana State Agricultural Marketing Board.

Meanwhile, the scrutiny of the nomination papers will be
conducted tomorrow and nominations can be withdrawn upto 3pm
on March 22.

Polling, if required, would be held on March 30 between 9
am and 4 pm. The ruling Congress is set to retain the seat as
it has strength of 46 in the 90 member state assembly and
enjoys the support of the Independents.
