Synthetic anti-diabetic drugs can cause side-effects
Indore: A scientist at the Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalya`s Life Sciences Research Department here has cautioned that routinely used anti-diabetic drugs could cause side effects like increase in thyroid, fat and anti-oxidant system in human beings if not monitored properly.
Dr Rameshwar Jatwa who recently received `young scientist` award from the University Grants Commission (UGC) said that his experiments on four synthetic drugs on diabetic models of rats and mice found that they could cause side effects related to functioning of thyroid and causing oxidative stress. He said that he is working on an anti-diabetic plants from which a `natural medicine` could be developed under a UGC project for treatment of diabetes without any side effects.
Dr Jatwa said that he would not like to reveal the name of the plant till clinical trials are over.
